Cloud data migration checklist
A practical checklist for planning a move from an on-premises warehouse or database to the cloud.
Use this checklist to plan a data platform migration. Each item is a question your team should be able to answer before cutover.
Assess
- Which source systems, pipelines and reports exist today, and who owns each?
- Which reports are business-critical, and which can be retired?
- What are current data volumes, growth rates and peak workloads?
- Which data is sensitive and what access rules apply to it?
Design
- Which platform fits your skills, tools and cloud: Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or Fabric?
- How will data be organized into raw, cleaned and business-ready layers?
- How will access, encryption and audit logging work?
- What is the target cost, and how will it be monitored?
Migrate
- Have you grouped workloads into waves by value and complexity?
- Is code conversion automated where possible and reviewed where not?
- Are old and new platforms running in parallel?
- Do automated reconciliations compare row counts and key totals?
Cut over and operate
- Have business users signed off on reconciled reports?
- Is there a rollback plan for each wave?
- Are monitoring, alerting and support in place?
- When will the old platform be decommissioned?
