Cloud data migration checklist

A practical checklist for planning a move from an on-premises warehouse or database to the cloud.

Use this checklist to plan a data platform migration. Each item is a question your team should be able to answer before cutover.

Assess

  • Which source systems, pipelines and reports exist today, and who owns each?
  • Which reports are business-critical, and which can be retired?
  • What are current data volumes, growth rates and peak workloads?
  • Which data is sensitive and what access rules apply to it?

Design

  • Which platform fits your skills, tools and cloud: Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or Fabric?
  • How will data be organized into raw, cleaned and business-ready layers?
  • How will access, encryption and audit logging work?
  • What is the target cost, and how will it be monitored?

Migrate

  • Have you grouped workloads into waves by value and complexity?
  • Is code conversion automated where possible and reviewed where not?
  • Are old and new platforms running in parallel?
  • Do automated reconciliations compare row counts and key totals?

Cut over and operate

  • Have business users signed off on reconciled reports?
  • Is there a rollback plan for each wave?
  • Are monitoring, alerting and support in place?
  • When will the old platform be decommissioned?
