Five signs your data warehouse is ready to move to the cloud
Rising license costs, slow month-end reports and a backlog of data requests are signals worth acting on.
Many companies run reporting on a warehouse that was built ten or more years ago. It still works, mostly. The question is when "mostly" starts costing more than a move. These are the signals we look for.
1. Reports slow down at the worst possible time
If dashboards crawl at month end or queries time out during the close, the platform can't scale with demand. Cloud platforms separate storage from compute, so heavy workloads can get more capacity only when they need it.
2. Licensing and hardware renewals are coming up
A renewal is a natural decision point. Compare the full cost of staying, including hardware, support and the people who maintain it, against a managed cloud platform.
3. The data request backlog keeps growing
When every new report needs a specialist and a change ticket, teams build their own spreadsheets instead. A modern platform with self-service tools and a shared semantic layer shortens that loop.
4. You want AI, but the data isn't accessible
Machine learning and generative AI need clean, well-described data that modern tools can reach. Legacy warehouses often make that hard.
5. Only one or two people understand it
Key-person risk is real. If the people who built the system leave, the business is exposed. Migration is an opportunity to document, test and standardize.
How to start
Begin with an assessment: inventory sources, pipelines and reports, rank them by business value and complexity, and plan migration in waves. Run old and new in parallel, reconcile automatically, and switch off the old system only when the numbers match.
